Cameras & CCTV

Start with the cameras
you already have.

Your existing CCTV may already provide part of what KennelCam needs. We first need to understand your cameras, video setup and accommodation before deciding what can be reused.

The goal isn’t to replace working equipment unnecessarily. It’s to create the right customer view around your kennel.

Start with your setup

You may not need to start again.

Many boarding kennels already use cameras for security, monitoring or checking accommodation. Those cameras may also provide useful video for KennelCam, but whether they are suitable depends on the cameras, the video system and how the kennel is set up.

That’s why the first step is understanding what you already have.

Your cameras

What cameras are already installed and where are they positioned?

Your video setup

How is the video currently managed or made available?

Your accommodation

Which camera views correspond to the rooms, kennels, suites or runs customers would be permitted to see?

From there, we can assess what may be reusable and what, if anything, needs to change.

More than just a camera

A useful camera is one that shows
the right part of their stay.

A camera can be perfectly useful for security without necessarily giving a pet owner a useful view of their pet. Customer viewing needs to be considered from a different perspective.

Placement

Can the camera see the part of the accommodation where the pet is likely to spend time?

Field of view

Does the view provide useful context without showing areas the customer should not have access to?

Video availability

Can the camera provide the video needed reliably enough for the intended customer experience?

Accommodation

Can the camera view be associated with the accommodation the customer has permission to view?

Placement matters

The customer needs to see the accommodation, not just the camera.

Where a camera is positioned can make a significant difference to the customer experience. A fixed high-corner view can provide useful context across an accommodation area while keeping the camera itself unobtrusive.

The right position will depend on the kennel layout and the view the kennel wants to make available.

Useful view of the resting area
Enough context to understand what the pet is doing
Stable fixed perspective
Appropriate view for customer access

From camera to customer

The camera is only one part of the experience.

The kennel may already have access to a wider CCTV system. The customer doesn’t need that. KennelCam is designed to provide the customer-facing experience around the permitted camera view for their pet’s stay.

Keep CCTV doing its job

Your CCTV watches the kennel.
KennelCam connects the permitted view to the customer.

Security and operational monitoring remain jobs for the kennel’s CCTV setup. KennelCam is focused on the customer-access experience around the camera view they’re permitted to see during the stay.

Assessed, not assumed

Sometimes, the existing setup may need to change.

An existing camera may be positioned for security rather than customer viewing, or the current video setup may not provide what KennelCam needs. If that’s the case, the right approach could involve adjusting the setup, adding a suitable camera or exploring another way to provide the required view.

The important thing is to assess that before making promises.

Reuse

Existing equipment may already provide a suitable view and video source.

Adjust

A camera or part of the setup may need repositioning or changing.

Add

A suitable additional camera may be the simplest way to provide the customer view.

Which route makes sense depends on the kennel and the equipment already in place.

Camera + accommodation

The view should make sense for the stay.

KennelCam is designed around the accommodation the pet is staying in. That accommodation can be associated with the camera view the customer is permitted to access, so staff aren’t choosing arbitrary cameras every time a customer checks in.

The customer receives the permitted view for the stay, not access to the kennel’s wider camera system.

Starting from scratch

No suitable camera setup yet?

That doesn’t automatically rule KennelCam out. We’d first need to understand the accommodation, the customer view you’re trying to provide and what video setup would be appropriate.

From there, the camera requirements can be scoped around the kennel rather than assumed in advance.

The right view

Camera placement is also about what shouldn’t be seen.

Customer camera access needs to be considered differently from internal CCTV monitoring. The view made available to a customer should be appropriate for their pet’s stay and the accommodation they’re permitted to see.

That means camera placement, field of view and customer access all need to be considered together.

Permitted accommodation view
No wider CCTV access
Temporary customer access

Questions, answered

Questions about cameras and CCTV.

Could KennelCam work with our existing CCTV?+

Potentially. KennelCam is being developed and tested with real camera hardware and cloud-connected video infrastructure. Existing setups vary, so we’d first need to understand your cameras and current CCTV setup rather than claim universal compatibility.

Will we need to replace our cameras?+

Not necessarily. Some existing equipment may already provide a suitable view and video source, while other setups may need adjusting or adding to. We’d need to assess what you already have first.

Does every accommodation need a camera?+

The customer needs an appropriate permitted camera view for the accommodation they’re staying in. How that is achieved depends on the kennel layout and camera setup, so the requirements need to be assessed for each operation.

What camera brands does KennelCam support?+

We’re not publishing a universal compatibility list at this stage. Camera and video setups vary, so we’d rather assess the equipment a kennel actually uses than imply compatibility we haven’t confirmed.

Can customers access our CCTV system?+

No. The intended KennelCam model gives the customer access to the permitted viewing experience for their pet’s stay rather than access to the kennel’s wider CCTV management system.

Can customers switch between our cameras?+

KennelCam is designed around giving the customer the permitted view associated with their pet’s stay, not unrestricted access to browse the kennel’s camera system.

What happens if our current camera view isn’t suitable?+

We’d look at why the existing view isn’t suitable and what would need to change. Depending on the setup, that could mean adjusting the camera position, changing part of the setup or considering an additional suitable camera.

Does KennelCam install CCTV?+

KennelCam is focused on the customer-access experience around kennel cameras. Camera and installation requirements would need to be assessed as part of the kennel’s setup rather than assumed in advance.
